Banksy - The Pianoman

Banksy - The Pianoman

We’re delighted to announce that the recent Summer Party was a huge success. The Club at Cricklade was packed full of ‘Team Wayne’ supporters who enjoyed the sounds of ‘Banksy – The Pianoman‘. Hugely popular in Cricklade, this was the legendary Steve James’ first appearance at The Club. We’re sure it won’t be his last! His mixed sets of Coldplay, Elton John, Party Hits and more entertained the crowd as well as drumming up support for the ‘Mr & Mrs Davis Honeymoon Fund’!

In all seriousness though, it was a terrific turnout and we raised an incredible £850! Thanks to Damien’s Uncle Phil who contributed over £100 through money raised at a recent boot fair. This takes the Team Wayne Grand Total to £14,814.60 (nearly 15 grand)!

The next big fundraising events we have coming up coming up are:

  • Oct 2013: The Great South Run – Kay, Ali, Shaun, Carl, Trevor…
  • Jan 2014: Kilimanjaro – Damien

Keep an eye on the Team Wayne website for all the details on how you can get involved!

Kilimanjaro Climb

Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro

When Damien setup Team Wayne in January 2011 he pledged to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, inspired by the Comic Relief efforts of Chris Moyles’ team 2 years earlier. However, the cost of this challenge is in excess of £2,500 per person. Consequently, Team Wayne set their sights on something a little more ‘realistic’ – The 3 Peaks Challenge.

Team Wayne supporters will recall that the 3 Peaks Challenge in April 2011 didn’t quite go to plan. But everyone loves a feel-good story and the team went onto famously raise over £10,000 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Despite climbing the wrong mountain, Damien’s original pledge looks set to now becoming a reality. He is aiming to climb Mount Kilimanjaro next year. Setting off on an 11 day round-trip to Tanzania (Thursday 24th Jan – Sunday 3rd Feb 2014), he will endeavour to reach the summit of 5,895M (19,341ft) above sea-level. The Uhuru Peak is the highest point on the continent of Africa, the largest free-standing mountain in the world and a staggering 4 times higher than Ben Nevis*!

*Incidentally, Damien has not climbed Ben Nevis.

But for those of you worried Damien might get lost, fear not. Damien will be embarking on an organised trek by Charity Challenge, the same group of experts who led the successful Comic Relief trek in 2009.

Have Your Say…

:PLEDGEitPledgeit is a brilliant new digital platform from the team at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Pledgeit works by taking fundraising on its head. Rather than thinking up a challenge ourselves (eg the infamous 3 Peaks Challenge) and then asking people to sponsor us, Pledgeit gives the power to affect change to those who stump up the cash – eg YOU!

On Pledgeit, YOU think of a challenge for someone then get all of your friends and family to pledge money. If, and only if, they complete the challenge the money goes to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research. No other charities currently do this. Because Pledgeit is the first crowdfunding site built in-house by a charity, 100% of the money goes to Leukeamia & Lymphoma Research.

We’ve kicked things off by challenging Damien’s Mum, Ali, to complete the Great South Run next year. Ali has been along to support Team Wayne the past couple of years and has vowed to do the run herself in 2013. So, to give her extra motivation pledge some sponsorship!

#RunningForWayneWho would like to represent Team Wayne in the BUPA Great South Run 2013? After the fantastic support that Team Wayne have had with this year’s run, we are inviting all our supporters to run with us again next year! Sign up and join the #RunningForWayne team!

The Bupa Great South Run is an annual 10 miles (16.09 km) road running race which takes place in Portsmouth, United Kingdom providing an intermediate distance between the ten kilometre and the half marathon (21.097 km) runs. The Great South Run is Europe’s most popular 10 mile race with over 25,000 runners taking part in the 2012 event!

The race has become part of Team Wayne folklore with Damien and Carl running in the 2011 event, then 5 members of Team Wayne (Kevin, Damien, Trevor, Shaun and Carl) running in the 2012 race. In 2011 we took 2 cars down to Portsmouth, this year we took a minibus. If the initial support is anything to go by, next year we will be taking a 53-seater coach!

If you want to join us in next year’s race, you can enter online via the Great Run website.

The entry fee is £41.00 (which is non-refundable).

The entry fee covers admin costs for the race organisers, including road closures and marshaling etc. There were 25,000 runners in this years’ event, which is a huge challenge for the organisers. Additionally everyone who finishes the race gets a finishers pack which typically includes:
• T-Shirt
• Medal
• drink,
• cereal bars

The entry fee guarantees your place in the event and ensures you receive a race pack. The race pack includes:
• Race Number
• Timing Chip to give you an accurate race time
• Competitors Information Guide

Once you’ve registered, please let us know and you will become a member of Team Wayne! When we’ve confirmed all the runners who are registered, we’ll update the Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research running team ‘The Unstoppables’. They provide us all with the famous bright yellow vests!

Finally, when we’ve assembled our 2013 team, we’ll look to setup sponsor forms and JustGiving pages so you can start your fundraising campaigns.
