Have I Got News For You

Have I Got News For YouThe story of our incredible adventure was one of the items included on the extended showing of the popular BBC2 news quiz show on Saturday night (14th May)!

The show featured regular team captains Paul Merton and Ian Hislop, and was presented by guest hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode (from BBC1’s Masterchef). Also on the show were guest panellists Samira Ahmed and Richard Herring.

You can watch the show online, on the BBC iPlayer. It is available to watch until 9:44PM on Sat 21 May 2011.

Our bit starts approximately 30 minutes into the show, during the “Odd One Out” feature:

Gregg Wallace:

“The mountain climbers story, ben nevis, stob ban…

…A group of 5 friends set out to scale ben nevis as part of the 3 peaks challenge for charity, but they climbed one called stob ban instead.

When did the climbers suspect something may not be right”?

Paul Merton:

“Welcome to the stob ban tourist and crap shop, buy your stob ban calendar here”?!

Gregg Wallace:

“According to team leader, Damien Davis ‘We had a gut feeling we might have taken a wrong turn, but from ground level those mountains all look about the same height‘!”

A Lesson Learned

Mountain RescueAfter the excitement of the media coverage settles down, we can pause and reflect on our incredible adventure.

It’s safe to say that we got lucky. We’ve had some advice from a former member of the Royal air force mountain rescue service who has advised us to ensure we are properly prepared before we try anything like this again.

Rest assured, we will make sure we have learned the necessary skills, gain the right knowledge, and get a competent experienced team member along with us – not to mention making sure every single member of the team has a compass & map!

No-one came to harm and we can all enjoy a chuckle at our mishaps – but we need to remember that people do sustain serious injuries and sometimes worse on our mountains. If anyone else is thinking of attempting the 3 peaks challenge – please, please make sure you are properly prepared.
