Kilimanjaro Climb

Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro

When Damien setup Team Wayne in January 2011 he pledged to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, inspired by the Comic Relief efforts of Chris Moyles’ team 2 years earlier. However, the cost of this challenge is in excess of £2,500 per person. Consequently, Team Wayne set their sights on something a little more ‘realistic’ – The 3 Peaks Challenge.

Team Wayne supporters will recall that the 3 Peaks Challenge in April 2011 didn’t quite go to plan. But everyone loves a feel-good story and the team went onto famously raise over £10,000 for Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research.

Despite climbing the wrong mountain, Damien’s original pledge looks set to now becoming a reality. He is aiming to climb Mount Kilimanjaro next year. Setting off on an 11 day round-trip to Tanzania (Thursday 24th Jan – Sunday 3rd Feb 2014), he will endeavour to reach the summit of 5,895M (19,341ft) above sea-level. The Uhuru Peak is the highest point on the continent of Africa, the largest free-standing mountain in the world and a staggering 4 times higher than Ben Nevis*!

*Incidentally, Damien has not climbed Ben Nevis.

But for those of you worried Damien might get lost, fear not. Damien will be embarking on an organised trek by Charity Challenge, the same group of experts who led the successful Comic Relief trek in 2009.
